Castle Course - April 2017

This is a continuation of our 2017 April three-plus weeks for us in Scotland/St. Andrews. Following, are some comments about the Jubilee Course -- one of our favorites!

-----

The Jubilee Course is a for-sure golf-day for us during our nearly-one-month April visit that we are lucky to enjoy on a regular basis.

The Jubilee, scoring-wise, is more of a challenge than the Eden and (perhaps) less of a scoring challenge than the New course (in our experience) -- but. in any case: All the courses on "this side of town" are wonderful golf/walks and each are memorable in their own way.

This Web page is, for now, just a holding place for 2017's photos that I select for later-on merging with photos selected from the earlier trips. Someday, all photos will be merged/etc. -- as time allows.....

(The photos, below, are from information provided by the Links Trust to players/visitors who come to St. Andrews).

A fun/worthwhile Round of Golf before or after playing your "regular" course of the day. This view cannot be re-created anywhere else in the world. A special place, for certain, for golfers and other visitors.

There is no "club-hitting" practice/warmup area for these Visitor's-Clubhouse-located courses at their starting areas. There is a wonderful club-hitting area located about 1-mile away from this-seen clubhouse (near the Eden Course clubhouse/parking area). Some players take advantage of that and warmup there prior to playing on the Jubilee, The New - or, the Old Course.

In 2017, we took advantage of this area and took a very-worthwhile lesson from one of the Links Trust Practice Center's professionals. We can highly recommend the service, if you have time to do so.

Notes / "Disclaimers"

As I mentioned as you started reading things while on these Web pages: I have not had time to "merge" things together in one place. So... Some of the comments and, perhaps, a few photos, are from our previous April-in-St. Andrews, Scotland's visits to the Jubilee Course. Someday, the information will be in one place. Someday... and, if you believe that I will ever "catch up"... well, just don't believe such!

MOST of the following is from our April 2017 trip.

1st - Jubilee Course
Par 4, 337 (318) Yards
1st - Tee

A very-fair driving hole to get started with. A generous fairway to aim at and as long as you end up in the fairway the green is (normally...) very reachable. A good starting hole! Pulling your drive left can end up with a more-challenging lie for your second shot than being right.... depending upon the time of year (for rough growth). Approaching the green from the right is a good idea; leading many of us to be "right" on our opening tee shot on the Jubilee.

(2016 Photo)

All except the very early tee times will no doubt have a gallery to watch your opening shot.

1st Fairway Area - Jubilee Course

Arriving to the green via the mounds on the right-approach area is preferred to flirting with the left-front protecting greenside bunker. It is not unusual to have a chip to the 1st green at the Jubilee -- after either a short-second shot or a run-over-the-green second shot.

This is a cropped-photo from a second-shot photo taken from the 1st Fairway at the Jubilee.
That is the 2nd Tee just past the 1st green and the shown golf-bags. Normally, on these links courses: A short distance green-to-tee.
A wonderful walk is assured at St. Andrews.

2nd - Jubilee Course

2nd Tee

Out of bounds, right on this tee shot. With a good drive: A terrific, short, second shot awaits.

I wonder how long it will last...
It will be missed when it goes away.

A tiny, but wonderful green. A spot well worth taking your time to enjoy.

3rd - Jubilee Course
Par-5, 524 (506) yds.

3rd Tee

The first of many great driving holes at The Jubilee. Miss the first left-side-fairway bunker and the hole sets up great for your second shot. A fun par-5.

The area has changed a bit over the years - but, the general characteristics-of continue to be the same.
For some reason... I tend to end up playing from the back-side of this green. A slow learner, I guess!

9th - Jubilee Course
Par-3, 182 (139) yds.

A new (the present, shown in this photo) green location was opened in 2014.
Prior to that, the green was on the top left part of the green-area shown, below. (Quite near the 10th tee).

10th - Jubilee Course
Par-4, 403 (387) yds.

A long Par-4, with out of bounds left. The first of three in a row TERRIFIC driving holes. In "earlier days" right-side drives were often in gorse/etc. and lost balls. The right side has been "cleaned up" a bit. However, going right off the tee (if the ball is found) offers a challenging/long second shot; I recommend just finding the fairway somehow on your second shot and play this hole as a par 5. If you DO find the fairway on the drive, other than being a length-challenge, the second shot is fun; watching the ball bound down the fairway is part of links golf -- so, take advantage of that on this hole.

The green is quite large, slopes to the right (in the direction of the 11th tee) and is very true, putting-wise. A wonderful par 4. Just, long... especially, to we old folks! I was surprised that I could not find more recent photos of the Jubilee 10th... I guess that I am always looking for the ball off of the fairway!

(Sorry - Another 2009 photo - and, I missed, over the years, a fairway-shot photo..).
The flag shown on the right-side of this photo is the 12th green, with the higher-level 13th tee in the background.
The 11th tee is just to the right of this 10th green.
Back-to-back Par 5s are coming up for Jubilee #11 and #12.
Someday I re-play/photograph this hole!...

11th - Jubilee Course
Par-5, 488 (420) yds.

The first of two back-to-back Par 5s on the Jubilee back-nine. Two terrific driving holes -- with this (the 11th) adding an unusual fairway tree to the challenge. The green is well-protected, sloped back-to-front and is laid out perfectly for those who try to reach the green in two. The second shot is another wonderful links-style golf shot: Watch the ball "bound along" and enjoy the result.

12th - Jubilee Course
Par-5, 516 (479) yds.

The second of two back-to-back Par 5s on the Jubilee back-nine. Another wonderful driving hole; if played from the mound-ed tee area (a normal "regular tee" location) take the time to look around end enjoy the views around this links golf course. Very special. Over the years, the Links Trust has "gorse-managed", etc. some of the right-side-of-the-fairway area and that has been a welcome feature for me; although a lost ball (if the tee shot is drove-right) is still a strong possibility. Long hitters may reach the left-side fairway bunkers. A true 3-shot par-5; however, the green is laid out perfectly for the long right-to-left golfer who wishes to give a try at reaching the well-protected green. A wonderful golf hole. Enjoy.

A say "Fairway Shot" as I am not certain this is from a Third Shot area or further back.
Someday I re-take photos of this wonderful/challenging Par-5.

13th - Jubilee Course
Par-3, 176 (147) yds.

An elevated tee for the Regular Tee(s) offer some fine views of both the sea area and, in the other direction: The Scottish/Fife hills. The lower-located front tee is a bit more protected on a windy day. There may be a wait on the tee - so, take time to look around and to watch the success of the players on the 12th hole. The close-to-the-13th green 14th tee is located such that if there are players on the 14th tee you need to wait for them to signal you to hit your tee shot on the 13th. Ok -- perhaps, you are on vacation?

14th - Jubilee Course
Par-4 (Par-5), 423 (415) yds.

Another terrific driving hole on the Jubilee Course. Many of us will be happy with a third shot to the double-green (shared with the Jubilee 4th hole) and a one-putt par. Why not?

(A 2016 photo).

14th Tee
14th Second Shot
Long - However: Special - Especially in the late afternoon with the sun on the 'Ol Grey Town.

Third Shot (for some of us..) - Approach from 66 yds.

(A cropped photo from the one shown to your left)

15th - Jubilee Course
Par-4, 346 (341) yds.

From the tee - and, from the Course Guide's shown distance - it seems to be not too difficult a Par-4. However, one MUST find the fairway and the second shot to the uphill green is a challenge. The left-side of the fairway bunker is reachable from any tee location. The right-side gorse/etc. is, basically: Un-playable. A fun golf hole -- if you are on vacation.... In a match-play situation: Anything can happen score-wise, so it is a never-give-up golf hole. I also enjoy the hole from a personal point of view -- as the Red tee sometimes is back of the Regular tee and my playing partner, then, plays first to "show me the way"; Nice!

(A 2016 photo).

Uphill... So, hopefully, you are on vacation (if your approach shot rolls back...).
(A 2016 Photo)

16th - Jubilee Course
Par-4, 418 (409) yds.

Another wonderful (well, for some of us extremely challenging...) driving hole. Line up / aim correctly, with a slight right-to-left emphasis if possible, hit it strongly and you will still be faced with a challenging/long second shot to a well-protected slightly-uphill and large green. A wonderful golf hole -- if you like a challenge. The fairway afar can be over-hit and long-hitters may find the rough past the fairway.

16th Tee
16th Tee Area
A wonderful, weather-protected spot. The right photo, below, shows the 15th green's flag up high and that green's uphill nature that you just finished. The bench is a perfect walking distance from the Visitor's clubhouse if you like to enjoy such before an evening dinner or a Sunday afternoon lunch.

After you finish the 16th, heading to the 17th you will pass by the Jubilee 2nd green area; you were "up there" 3 hours or so, ago!

17th - Jubilee Course
Par-3, 199 (180) yds.

Straight-forward - a long, fair Par-3. A driver, now, for me; and, depending upon the wind: Perhaps for many players.

(A 2016 photo)

17th Tee
17th Green Area
(A 2009 photo)
Other than some slight of-town-view changes; I don't remember that much has changed... let me know if you think I am incorrect in this regard.

18th - Jubilee Course
Par-4, 405 (372) yds.

There are many great driving-holes on The Jubilee Course -- and: It is appropriate that the 18th maintain that quality. Whether you are a right-to-left or left-to-right player, you will enjoy the drive. Bunkers, right side of the fairway are in play from any tee for well-hit drives. Many of us will end up playing this as a par-5 and will have a challenging third/approach shot to the well-protected green. The putting surface is quite large and very fair. A terrific golf hole -- assuming you have the patience after the challenging previous seventeen golf holes just completed. Enjoy a respite in the Visitors’ Clubhouse after play.

Miss the bunkers and enjoy this true "Scottish" shot. It will bound along the fairway forever!

From 225 yds to the green.

From 180 yds to the green.
18th Green Area
Many of us will have this as a third-shot (approach) to this long par-4.
Long hitters, who attack this final green on their second shot: Have an opening -- or, may find a greenside bunker.
