Photograph Examples - June, 2003 - from SCScompA

This month we:

  1. Show a few examples of images and modified (using PaintShop Pro) images.

  2. This month's Great Golf Hole.

Here is a collage of some pictures from this month's example.

The images shown in this example are in the "computer" as a result of being obtained from a digital camera or from scanning a photograph or other item. The following shown images default to digital camera origin and, if not, the shown picture will be identified as a scanned image. If digital camera, the photograph has normally been taken at an Olympus Camera "HQ" setting of 1.3 megapixels (1280 x 960), with some pictures having been taken at less pixel detail ("SQ") 0.3 megapixels 640 x 480). In most cases, even if the digital picture was taken at these-mentioned sizes, the picture has been resized for showing on computer screens. I try to keep most images to have a maximum height of 600 pixels for computer-display. I use Paint Shop Pro (from JASC) as my primary application for modifying/resizing/coming photographic images into one image (photo).

Scanned photographs are scanned at 300 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), 150 or 100 PPI, and the chosen PPI will be identified in the comments for that particular image.

The following is aimed at showing examples of using a computer system, digital cameras, and perhaps scanners, as part of home computing environment. Hopefully, the shown pictures will give you some ideas for use of your home computer system.

Contact SCScompA if you have any comments/questions regarding anything that is shown in this Web page.

Example Images

This month, rather than show a particular example, I show a few recent images (digital photos and scanned images) and comment on the image if appropriate.

Vacation Pictures

Take the time, this summer, to move your photos to your PC system and build a Web page approach for showing the pictures. It is not necessary to have the pictures on "The Web"! As we have talked about in previous newsletters, we can use "HTML" as a methodology locally (on our own PC) for showing the results of our photo-taking. Ask someone to assist you, if you are not certain how to do so.

A few "vacation"-type pictures follow - hopefully, to give you some ideas.

A Lone Golfer Studying his scorecard. Hoping for a three on this par-3!

A Busy-Yet-Wonderful City Boston's North End. I was lucky one year I visited this area and was able to share an evening with many others at an open-street-market festival.

Vineyards Near Barbaresco, Italy. Not only great food and wine -- but normally wonderful weather and friendly hosts makes this a great place to visit.

A Quilt I Like I am fortunate to work with a quilt store's Web page and I see a number of nice quilts. This one is made of brushed cotton and is quite striking.

A variety of photos/images were shown above. Hopefully, one gave you some ideas as your 2003 photo-taking moves forward -- as part of a vacation or otherwise.

A Great Golf Hole

With the 2003 British Open golf tournament coming up soon it is appropriate that I show photos from one of my favorite links courses.

Dornoch (northern Scotland) is a long way from south England (where the 2003 British Open will be held). However, I am quite sure there will be many a golfer who visits UK this summer and, then, travel north. If they have time to go to Dornoch and play Royal Dornoch Golf Club, two holes they will play are shown below.

Dornoch's 5th

A wonderful short par 4. Wonderful, in part, since the view from the 5th tee is special. When the player looks around and sees this terrific place he/she knows they are playing a special golf course.

Dornoch's 9th

A three shot par 5 for most players. If the wind is "up" -- the player hopes that the wind is with his/her shot! This view is from where the player's second shot is often hit.

If you are a golfer and you are heading to Scotland: Take the time to drive north to Dornoch. I am quite certain you will not regret it!

.........

I wish you well in your picture taking and travels or other activities -- and hope you share that with a journal and Web-type of presentation you share with family/friends.
