North Ridge Country Club, located in the northern part of Raleigh, North Carolina USA, is a private country club with facilities for golf, tennis, swimming, exercise, and dining for use by its 900 member's families. Two golf courses are the major ground's feature, together with 15 tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, and extensive clubhouse facilities to support member's use. The club is self-managed, with a Board of Directors composed of members and a full-time club manager responsible for everyday duties and staffing for the entire operation. Membership and use of North Ridge Country Club is by invitation.
The club was started in early 1968 by E. N. Richards who also developed numerous Raleigh area shopping centers and suburban housing developments. At that time, developing such a large facility in farmland 12 miles outside of central Raleigh was a challenge met by Mr. Richards and the founding members of North Ridge.
The first golf course (now known as the inside 18 holes of the existing two courses) was designed by George W. Cobb, who also designed courses including Croisdale in Durham, NC, and Port Royal at Hilton Head SC. A second 18 holes (the outside 18 holes) was built starting in 1970 with the designer being Gene Hamm, who has done many golf courses in the southeastern United States with numerous courses in the Myrtle Beach, SC and Pinehurst NC areas including Pinewild CC at Pinehurst. The two-inside/outside courses were combined to be the two existing 18-hole courses, now named the Oaks and the Lakes.
Leif Valland designed the clubhouse originally and it had its grand opening in January 1970. The clubhouse and other facilities supporting golf, tennis, swimming, exercise, and dining underwent major revision in 1996/7.
